TODAYS QUESTION: How do you safely
picket a horse?
ANSWER:
Picketing refers to tying
a horse for an extended period while out riding or horse camping. (More
than the casual lead line thrown over a branch during a lunch break! )You
should have about 30 feet of cotton rope and a 10 foot cotton lead line
at least 3/4" in diameter. Use cotton rather than nylon to avoid the
possibility of nasty rope burns. Tie the cotton picket rope 10 feet up between
two trees about 15 feet apart. Your horses lead rope should then be tied
with a quick release knot to the middle of the picket rope and should allow
his nose to just touch the ground so he can reach his food and lie down
to rest. To avoid a possible rope burn, polo wraps or shipping boots are
nice if you are camping with your rig and can carry extra equipment. Never
leave your horse unattended! |
