Gaits


GAITS
Walk: A four-beat gait; footfalls are distinct and regular. Beginning with the left hind, the succession of foot placement is: 1.) left hind, 2.) left fore, 3.) right hind, 4.) right fore.
Trot:

 

A two-beat gait with a consistant rhythm and tempo; diagonal legs function in pairs, striking the ground simultaneously for one beat followed by a moment of suspension. The sequence of footfalls is: 1.) right hind and left fore (suspension), 2.) left hind and right fore (suspension).

Canter:

 

A three-beat gait with suspension; the succession of foot placement is: 1.) outside hind, 2.) diagonal pair of legs, 3.) inside foreleg (suspension). When tracking left, the left foreleg should lead; when tracking right, the right foreleg should lead.

Gallop:

 

A four-beat gait with suspension and speed (18-45 mph); the sequence of footfalls is: 1.) outside hind, 2.) inside hind, 3.) outside foreleg, 4.) inside foreleg (leading), (suspension).

Rein-Back (Backing up): An unnatural four-beat gait; the sequence of footfalls is: 1.) right fore, 2.) left hind, 3.) left fore, 4.) right hind in a backward direction.
Pace:

 

A two-beat lateral gait; usually fast and fairly smooth. The succession of foot placement is: 1.) left hind and left fore (suspension), 2.) right hind and right fore (suspension).

Amble:

 

A four-beat lateral gait; sequence of footfalls is the same as those in the walk with the horse stepping from one leg to another.. Similar to the pace in rhythm and tempo, but executed without suspension.
