~All products with expiration dates in the EquiKit™ will be good for a minimum of one year.~
All other contents are purchased and supplied to my EquiKit™"DELUXE" fresh, such as the Latex Nitrile Exam Gloves, Gauze Pads, Batteries for the Flashlight, and including the SyrVet Cohesive bandages (this is important because these contain a natural rubber
latex product and can breakdown over time and not be as useful!).
{I make small, fresh batches of my Herbal Healing Salve for the Kits and this will have a 'shelf' life of about 2 years.}
*{Please note that when you purchase my EquiKit™"DELUXE", you WILL receive all of the medical supplies as listed above, but on occasion, due to packaging and design changes by my vendors,
some items may have slightly different packaging, shape, or color than those items seen in my photos.}*
EquiKit™"DELUXE" itself weighs 7 1/2 lbs. without the carry case.
Some items have been unwrapped and readied for quick use, bandages properly rolled, batteries installed, excess packaging removed.
I have been an equine veterinarian for 17 years and an avid rider for 30 years. I am an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) as well as other professional Veterinary organizations and am in clinical practice. I enjoy spending time with young horse people in 4H and work with a handicapped riding program. I immensely enjoy working for single horse owners, breeding farms, and large boarding facilities.
I've been the 'track Vet' for harness horses, and still have occasion to venture out to various locations
in the U.S. to be entrusted with pre-purchase veterinary examinations.
We are proud to stand our impressive registered stallion Zelos at our farm for a very limited number of breedings.
I adore working with weanling's and am blessed to have spent valuable time with Ray Hunt.
I have put together this rather complete, farm/stable and trailering equine first aid medical kit [EquiKit™"DELUXE"]
after many years of practical clinical experience on what would be at a minimum,
essential to have on hand for an emergency or everyday minor bump, cut, or condition.
*There are very important reasons why I have chosen the items contained within the EquiKit™"DELUXE" !
My goal is to provide you with a balance between affordability and having the correct breadth of medical supplies,
to treat most urgent-care situations prior to your vet arriving or while away at an event.
Designed to be grabbed at a moments notice and easily carried to your horse in need
without having to take the time to think: "do I have everything?!"
I've reflected back at the calls I've gone on in the past where a horse was in trouble,
and I have consulted with friends who are also horse vets.
From this I've tailored the medical supplies found in the EquiKit™"DELUXE" .
You will find that the EquiKit™"DELUXE" goes well beyond what is found in many other horse first aid kits.
I believe it is very unfair to you and your horse, whose welfare rests entirely with us, to incorporate items
which are virtually useless when treating most urgent medical care situations.
Articles like alcohol prep pads, saline wipes, povidone iodine patches or swabs, 'cleansing swabs',
and the like seem to be 'filler-type' items and are virtually useless when treating most urgent-care situations.
The EquiKit™"DELUXE" medical supplies are found below.
I have taken into account bulk purchasing, use of brand name and therapeutically equivalent generic items, and made careful selection of the items in my EquiKit™"DELUXE" to give you the best return on your investment. The medical supplies in the EquiKit™"DELUXE" are the identical items I keep on hand in my own barn. Applicable items are 'med-surg' quality, such as the highly absorbent gauze pads, the large sterile non-stick pads, Povidone Iodine, etc. Some first aid kits available today have a nice assortment of bandaging materials and such, but I feel many of them
do not have the right variety and mix of medical supplies in them which are at a minimum,
essential to have on hand to treat the odd mishaps and conditions which are more common place than one might realize.
In other words, 'you get what you pay for!'
You want an emergency first aid kit which is affordable but also has the ''correct mix' of good quality supplies for your horse when the need arises.
You should plan to obtain a carry case of your own to house the contents of the EquiKit™"DELUXE". I like to use a Clear-Sided carry case for my own EquiKit™"DELUXE" so that my medical supplies can be readily identified
and retrieved when I need them in a hurry. Also, just a quick look can help you identify what you
might need to restock in the EquiKit™"DELUXE". *An adequate sized carry case that the EquiKit™"DELUXE"
contents would fit into would measure: 12 inches tall X 12 inches wide X 8 inches wide.
This size will allow some room for additional items which you might wish to add.
I have seen clients with duffle bags and back-pack style bags have the entire contents
of other Equine kits spilled-out onto the barn floor getting quite dirty, in a furious
attempt to retrieve something needed for their injured horse.
I also feel that canvas-style, nylon, or cloth carry bags used to 'sack' equine medical supplies
such as bandaging materials, can be good hosts for the development of mold spores,
particularly when stored in a barn. I also like a smooth-sided carry container because
it's non-porous surface can be wiped clean and it resists water and dust.
*This EquiKit™"DELUXE" is to aid you in helping your horse while you wait for your vet to come.
I have been on many, many horse emergencies over the past 17 years.
On occasion, while on these vet calls, I find that the horse owner did not have
much in the way of medical supplies put together.
Things would have gone smoother for all involved if a thoughtful collection of medical supplies had been on hand
and the client had a basic strategy and plan ready to implement before I had arrived.
Most importantly, become even more acquainted with horse health issues and how to recognize them.
Also, get to know your horses’ normal patterns and behaviors.
Practice how to do health care tasks like treating a wound, taking a temp and pulse,
or applying a leg wrap BEFORE a crisis happens.
The very best way to increase your knowledge base is to continue to read the horse health care literature,
review my 'Horse Keeping Reference Guide' contained in the EquiKit™"DELUXE" ,
and consult and partner with your own Equine vet. Having a plan with some practice, and
keeping on hand an equine medical kit like the EquiKit™"DELUXE" , will help you keep your cool in
an emergency and better help your horse prior to the arrival of your veterinarian.
Found in the EquiKit™"DELUXE" also, is my 'Horse Keeping Reference Guide' which I compiled and wrote after a good many years of treating horse emergencies. It is simply a clear and concise guide about 'Horse & Rider's Hands-On Horse Care'. *My 'Guide' will also give you the information you need to effectively use all of the items in the EquiKit"DELUXE". I've found this to be the best information to offer you since it comes from my own clinical experience, and because some of the 'Guides' available out there today can conflict with one another as to the approaches they offer. *Also, please note below, the new and excellent educational materials I have chosen to add to the EquiKit™"DELUXE" from the
American Association of Equine Practitioners. As an active member, I have access to these resources.
They have been written by excellent, member Equine Veterinarians which I believe you will find
to be great adjunctive reading to go along with my 'Horse Keeping Reference Guide'.
Thanks for your visit and I ask that you carefully consider this EquiKit™"DELUXE" as a meaningful and prudent choice for yourself, your Trainer, or another horse owner. Also, a great idea for the first time horse owner or those doing a good bit of trailering. For adult use or with adult supervision.
The right choice of medical supplies carefully chosen by an very tenured Equine Veterinarian.
Perfect for the barn, tack room, paddock, trailer, or riding event!
